The Start Line _ Helen Trevaskis, Illustrator and Writer
Flushing Sailing Club Cornwall
< The Start Line >
It seemed fitting that when going to photograph an artwork commission called The Start Line, the starting gun on the day was fired - as it were - with a croissant gifted to me for fortification, and with an exciting brief in hand.
Helen Trevaskis asked me to photograph her artwork to accompany her entry for an international illustration competition.
The artwork commission was created after a competitive call by Flushing Sailing Club in Cornwall - following construction of a new clubhouse in the club’s centenary year.
The commission theme was “The Start Line” and Helen’s aim was to create a piece that complemented the club’s modern design and helped members feel they were out on the water among boats and the elements even when sitting inside.
It is is the first thing that members and visitors see when they enter the sailing club, and is specifically shaped to enhance the exciting geometries of the building’s interior.
Using a combination of monoprints, experimental mark-making with foam and digital painting. The final piece was digitally printed onto canvas.
Helen Trevaskis is a UK-based illustrator and writer, drawn to tougher topics and with a love of experimental image-making. Her work includes self-authored picture books, book covers and editorial as well as site-specific works.
