Carbis Bay, Cornwall and the G7 Summit 2021

“Could you grow up three miles from the sea, and never see it?”

“It just seems unbelievable.”

The Patch, BBC Radio 4

An online image search for Carbis Bay in Cornwall, will give the impression that the leaders attending the G7 summit in 2021 are being hosted in a sub-tropical paradise.

Page after page of search results illustrate beautiful beaches under clear blue skies, lapped by crystal clear waters of the Atlantic and in the shadow of luxurious vacation accommodation and second homes.

G7 attendees will certainly be witness to those - if the weather co-operates.

A common refrain in Cornwall however, is that there are two Cornwalls: one can be characterised as a picture-perfect playground for visitors and holidaymakers; the other location is characterised by what is often a very different lived experience of child poverty, economic deprivation, poor health and stunted educational outcomes.
